The word Gabion is derived from Italian and Latin, meaning ‘cage’, or ‘big cage’. These cages are typically filled with rocks and used for retaining walls to stabilize steep slopes or to help stabilize shorelines against erosion. When Quartersawn started to design a new home perched on a Minnehaha Creek ravine edge, the steep slope down to the water was an immediate design challenge. A gabion wall system was designed to provide a small level patio behind the home. Concrete was reused from the foundation of an old home that was removed from the site.
