The homeowners initially approached us with a dilemma – their residence, while spacious for formal occasions, lacked the practicality required for everyday living and hosting their large family. Recognizing the need for a more functional kitchen and living area to accommodate their four adult sons during holidays, we got to work transforming their home into a hosting dream.
The original kitchen’s secluded layout was our top concern. It was completely closed off from the rest of the house. You had to walk through a mudroom to get to the living room where the family would spend the majority of their time. We crafted an innovative addition, seamlessly blending with the existing structure, to not only expand the kitchen but also introduce a dinette and establish an open connection to the family room. The infusion of crisp white cabinetry and expansive windows brought newfound brightness. Repurposing the former kitchen area resulted in a well-designed powder room, pantry, and mudroom.
The homeowners had a few key wishes for their outdoor space. First and foremost, they wanted to bridge the gap between their home and the backyard. To achieve this, the design incorporated an abundance of windows along the rear wall, creating a visual connection to the lush outdoor space.
A highlight of the project was the introduction of an outdoor dining pergola, acting as a transitional space that seamlessly connected the interior and exterior. The roof of the pergola extended over the deck, providing shade without constricting the views. The elevated dining deck was thoughtfully designed with stone steps, creating an open and inviting atmosphere for outdoor gatherings.
The result of this ambitious project was a breathtaking backyard retreat that perfectly fulfilled the homeowners’ wishes. A place that was not only functional but also gracious, where they could entertain family and friends in the privacy of their new yard.
A strategic decision to reorient the garage towards the back alleyway allowed for the removal of a long driveway that took up half of the existing yard. This not only maximized the privacy of the backyard but also freed up space for landscaping. It was a practical solution that enhanced the overall functionality of the outdoor space.
The homeowners are delighted with the transformation of their kitchen, family room, and backyard.
