HOMEOWNER STORY

A Historic Home's Evolution

With a growing family, these homeowners reached out to Quartersawn for assistance in exploring how to create a home they could raise their family in for years to come, in the St Paul, Summit Hill neighborhood they loved.  After exploring possibilities with their present home, the best solution came from relocating just a few blocks away to a grand and gracious home that had the space they desired.  It also provided the opportunity for them to tailor and update the home to their exact needs and tastes.

Staircase Shuffle

Inside the home, upon entering, a stunning grand staircase welcomes visitors. Surprisingly, this layout underwent a significant transformation – where a powder room now stands, a secondary staircase once existed.

To enhance functionality, the original secondary staircase was removed, and a new staircase was added beneath the existing primary stairs that previously only went up from the entry.  It was important to the homeowners that this blended seamlessly, so Quartersawn crafted a custom newel post and millwork to match the original architecture.

A Dazzling Dining Room

The dining room showcases the original built-ins and a sizable pocket door. Quartersawn meticulously restored the original pocket door to its former glory, incorporating a soft-close feature. The built-ins were painted to brighten the space and bring out the colors of the original stained glass.  The narrow opening to a previous butler’s pantry was expanded to better connect to the kitchen.

Kitchen Rejuvenation

Over the decades, the kitchen had been remodeled and when our homeowners found this stately home, the kitchen was dated and in desperate need of a rejuvenation.  Not only was a staircase removed but a mechanical chimney as well.  Yielding space for a large center walnut island, featuring cubbies for kids’ activities.  Lining the perimeter of the kitchen is classic inset face frame cabinets, featuring large drawers and small appliance storage.  Topping the expansive cabinetry is classic soapstone countertops flanking a beautiful European induction range.

Primary Suite Turned Sanctuary

The second level of the home was also transformed.  The original hall at the top of the stairs was substantial and extended to the front of the home leaving a significant amount of unusable space.   Reconfiguring this space made possible the addition of a luxurious primary bathroom complete with a freestanding soaking tub, steam shower, private water closet, and stacked laundry closet in the hallway.  Inside the primary suite, a walk-in closet and private office were also added.
