Tudor Contemporized

Fulton, Minneapolis

This was a three-story addition that brings a slightly more contemporary feel and amenities into a beautifully historic home – a seamless blending of 1927 and 2021. On the lower level, the rec room was refurbished and expanded to add a playroom. On the main level, the addition supports the new, combined open kitchen and eating area that now flow into the existing porch with a new archway that matches the house’s historical style. The new mudroom is concealed from the main flow of the house, and provides ample space for entering the home, while the powder room has been moved to a location that balances accessibility while entertaining with being “out of the way.” Upstairs, the addition provides a walk-in closet, flexible closet/office space, and an owners’ bathroom that is a modern luxury nestled within its historical surroundings. To achieve this while honoring the original character of the home, the architect paid close attention to the scale and proportions of the original house. The design team maintained and was inspired by existing elements like pointed arch openings in the hallway and unique detailing along the staircase, which later inspired custom tiles sourced from Norway. This thoughtful interior is wrapped in the classic stucco style of the period on the outside, but now has new windows through which to view the world and a thorough mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrade to keep the home healthy for another 100 years. This project won the 2023 regional Chrysalis kitchen remodel award and the 2023 regional Chrysalis bathroom remodel award.
