Tangletown Transformation

Tangletown, Minneapolis

The homeowners of this charming 1920s residence located in the heart of Tangletown were eager to enhance the flow and functionality of their primary living space, the kitchen, all while preserving the architectural integrity of the home. To achieve this, Quartersawn removed a large utility closet to create a more spacious kitchen, complete with a generous antique-styled island. This reconfiguration facilitated the expansion of the doorway between the kitchen and dining room, enhancing the overall fluidity between these two key areas. Noteworthy features of this home include exquisite soapstone and marble countertops, a sprawling range, and a meticulously crafted custom mosaic backsplash.

An Eye for Design

Homeowner Story

With a keen eye for interior design, the homeowners approached Quartersawn with a clear vision for enhancing their charming 1920s home. Their primary objective was to create a kitchen that not only stunned with its aesthetics but also seamlessly integrated with the age and architecture of the home. The challenge was to create a kitchen that seamlessly blended contemporary functionality with the timeless allure of the homeโ€™s age and architecture.

Transforming the Footprint

The original kitchen layout included banquet seating that robbed the kitchen of space and functionality. As their children got older, the once-functional banquet evolved into wasted space. Adding to the kitchen dilemma was a storage closet right outside the kitchen that was used as a pantry. The closet wasnโ€™t functioning for the layout of the space and the needs of the family. Quartersawn decided to remove the closet and banquet to expand the footprint of the kitchen and completely transform the space.

Reconfiguring the kitchen layout allowed for additional custom cabinets, the introduction of a large custom antique-styled island, and a sprawling range, achieving a delicate balance between aesthetics and functionality.

Details of Design

The homeowner had a lot of inspiration for materials, colors, and textures they wanted to see in the space. We worked closely with the homeowners to bring it all together and create a cohesive space that radiates sophistication while embracing practicality. Soapstone countertops on the perimeter complement the marble countertops on the island. The kitchen has three different cabinets, a blend of black, antique white, and light-stained wood that inject depth and character into the space.

Details take center stage in this design narrative, evident in the soapstone, tile, and meticulously crafted custom mosaic backsplashes. A standout feature is the bespoke island, which was custom-built and inspired by repurposed antique furniture. The island is adorned with brass caps on the feet and traditional drawer pulls, seamlessly blending with the homeโ€™s overall aesthetic.

Cohesive Transitions

The thoughtful reconfiguration of the kitchen layout wasnโ€™t confined to its boundaries; it extended to enhance the connection between the kitchen and dining room. Quartersawn expanded the opening between the two rooms which greatly improved the flow and connection between the two spaces. Preserving the existing wood paneling and floors in the dining room maintained a sense of continuity. A fresh coat of paint and textured wallpaper breathed new life into the dining space, ensuring a cohesive transition from the revitalized kitchen.
