Inside your walls are the systems and structures that can either support your vision or present hidden challenges. Understanding what’s behind them is one of the most important steps in a successful remodel.
1. Old Work, New Problems
Over the years, many homes have seen DIY upgrades, makeshift fixes, or outdated construction methods that no longer meet today’s standards. It’s not uncommon to uncover:

In one recent project, converting a screened porch into an indoor sunroom, we opened up the walls to find the beams holding up the roof of the porch were not attached to the house. Because we plan for these kinds of surprises in remodeling, we were able to address the issue and reinforce the existing roof structure, without derailing the timeline.

One of our recent projects involved converting a screened porch into a cozy, four-season sunroom with a fireplace. The screened porch blocked the kitchen from the backyard and wasn’t usable year-round. By converting the porch into an indoor space and opening it up to the kitchen, the new comfortable sunroom bridged the distance between kitchen and backyard. To make that possible, we had to go beyond surface finishes. The existing exterior wall had no insulation and the HVAC didn’t extend to the porch. We upgraded the home’s systems to support the new space, extended the HVAC for balanced heating and cooling, and improved insulation throughout the adjacent rooms.
Now, not only does the sunroom flow seamlessly into the kitchen, but the entire back half of the house is more comfortable and functional.
