9 Ways to Add Character to Your Home Remodel

February 6, 2025

When it comes to home remodeling, itโ€™s easy to focus on function and forget the finer details that truly bring a space to life. When you add character to your home doesnโ€™t just elevate its aesthetic appeal; it also makes the space feel warm, inviting, and uniquely yours. Here are nine impactful ways we help homeowners infuse personality and charm into their homes.

Hardwood Flooring

Nothing beats the timeless beauty of hardwood floors. Whether you choose wide planks, herringbone patterns, or distressed finishes, hardwood instantly adds warmth and sophistication. Opt for a stain that complements your overall design and creates continuity throughout your space.

We often work on projects where we match the existing hardwood floors to the new hardwood floors added in an addition or reimagined space. We take great pride in our precision in matching stain and style for a seamless look that will last you a lifetime.

Custom Staircase Newel Posts

Staircases are often overlooked as a design feature, but custom newel posts can turn a basic staircase into a showstopper. Whether you prefer a sleek, modern design or a hand-carved traditional look, this small detail is a simple way to add character and charm.

One of our most creative staircase projects occurred in our Summit Hill Haven home. The original layout of the home had two staircases. To enhance functionality, the original secondary staircase was removed, and a new staircase was added beneath the existing primary stairs that previously only went up from the entry.  It was important to the homeowners that this blended seamlessly, so Quartersawn crafted a custom newel post and millwork to match the original architecture.

Painted Millwork

Crown molding, wainscoting, and baseboards offer an excellent opportunity to inject color and add character into your home. Instead of standard white, consider painting millwork in a bold or subtle complementary shade to enhance the architectural details of your space.

Nothing oozes charm as much as the small details that hold a big impact. In this charming dining room, we used the color Boothbay Gray on the millwork to create a cozy and modern aesthetic.

Upgraded Door Hardware

Swapping out generic door knobs and hinges for upgraded hardware is an easy and effective way to add character and charm. Look for antique brass, matte black, or aged bronze finishes to create a cohesive design that feels intentional.

The small details make a big impact when you invest in quality pieces. In this bar area, the door hardware beautifully compliments the rich walnut doors.

Statement Light Fixtures

Lighting is often referred to as the “jewelry” of a home, and itโ€™s a great way to make a statement. Opt for eye-catching chandeliers, pendants, or sconces that reflect your style. From vintage-inspired designs to sleek, modern options, the right lighting can transform a room.

In our Tangletown Untangled remodel, we reimagined the main floor kitchen, mudroom, and powder room. The powder room was relocated and equipped with high-end finishes that make this home as gorgeous as it is functional.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper is back in a big way, and itโ€™s an excellent way to add character and personality to a room. Whether you choose a bold, geometric print or a soft, floral design, wallpaper can bring texture, depth, and character to your walls. Consider an accent wall for a more subtle approach.

In an Edina home remodel, the hall bathroom became a canvas for a carefully selected botanical wallpaper, infusing lavish colors and a lively pattern. This choice added a deep richness to the space, seamlessly capturing the homeownerโ€™s blend of traditional and contemporary style.

Custom Cabinetry

Custom cabinetry goes beyond standard storage solutions by offering personalized details that reflect your style. Incorporate unique finishes, decorative molding, or glass panels to elevate your kitchen, bathroom, or built-ins.

Cabinetry plays a central role in defining the style of a kitchen or bar area. From classic shaker doors to sleek flat panels, each cabinet door style brings unique character and functionality to a space.

A Thoughtfully Designed Pantry

A well-organized pantry is both functional and beautiful. Add charm with custom shelving, sliding barn doors, or decorative labels for jars and bins. This often-overlooked space can become a stunning and practical feature of your home.

In Mac-Grove we remodeled the home and made space for a walk-in pantry. We added an extra layer of charm by adding a splash of color to that makes this space feel bright and inviting.

Mixing Metals

Gone are the days of matching every metal in your home. Mixing metalsโ€”like brushed nickel, aged brass, and black ironโ€”adds visual interest and depth. For example, pair brass faucets with matte black cabinet pull for a dynamic, modern look.

Mixing Metals to Add Charm

By incorporating these nine elements into your remodel, youโ€™ll create a home that not only functions beautifully but also tells a story. Remember, itโ€™s the unique touches that turn a house into a homeโ€”so donโ€™t be afraid to let your personality shine through in your design choices.
